wound. still an active scene here on fifth street at nicholson. in fact, the shooting happened at the corner by the sign. investigators trying to collect evidence, piece together exactly what led up to the shooting and of course, looking for the gunman responsible. now this call came in at around 4:00 this morning. when officers arrived on the scene, a woman was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. she was unresponsive. apparently has later died as a result of that gunshot wound. investigators looking for witnesses, collecting evidence. at this point, no word of any arrests. anyone with information, you're asked to call metropolitan police. reporting live in northwest, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. >> megan, thank you. 5:02 now. now to the winter weather. the motto is take easy on the roads. many side streets in maryland and virginia still look like this. with temperatures in the teen, the snow not plowed is now ice and that could make for a slow

the gun safety. >> as we speak, pro life supporters are gathering here in washington for the annual march for life. crews spent yesterday prepping the national mall for that rally. it begins there at noon today. demonstrators will eventually march to the capitol and to the supreme court as they did last year. you see -- this is one of the biggest pro life rallies of the year. the rally might affect -- attract record crowds. that's because this marks the 40th anniversary of the supreme court's roe v. wade decision. >> now today's rally could wreak havoc on your trip home this evening if you work downtown. there are road closures caused by this event. several streets between constitution and independence will be shut down starting at about 9:30 this morning. parts of seventh and f streets will also be closed. all the streets should be open by 6:30 tonight. it is now 5:04. 23 degrees.

it is sentencing day for one of the men convicted of robbing and killing a d.c. school principal. shah riff lancaster was one of five arrested for killing brian betts inside his home in 2010. betts was the principal at shaw middle school. he met one of the suspects on the internet and they all planned to rob him. he could get a life sentence without the possibility of parole. today a virginia jury gets to step outside the courtroom and actually see the scene where a former cop allegedly shot and killed a woman. daniel harmon-wright is a former culpeper police officer accused of shooting patricia cook in the parking lot last year. a witness testified yesterday the former cop's story was made up. we now know when the senate will vote on confirming i don't know kerry as secretary of state. that vote will come next tuesday. kerry faced few tough questions during his confirmation hearing yesterday. the senate foreign relations committee conducted the hearing

and he is the chairman. he got a bit emotional when discussed the prospect of becoming the nation's top diplomat. >> i would take office as secretary proud that the senate is in my blood. but equally proud that so too is the foreign service. kerry first testified before this committee in 1971. he just returned from vietnam and spoke out against the war. 5:09 right now. a judge recommending that some lawsuits against the owner of the colorado movie theater where 12 people were killed in a shooting rampage be dropped. the federal judge says colorado bars those wounded and families of those killed from bringing wrongful death claims against cinemark usa. the families can however, sue under a liability act that typically covers things like slips and falls. families of four killed in the massacre and several who were injured filed suit saying their theo owe the theater's lax

security -- who is to blame for two planes clipping wings at dulles. chopper 4 was on the scene shortly after it. we've learned that a united airlines flight arriving from brussels hit the wing of another united airlines plane parked at a gate. no one was hurt. coming up on 11 minutes after 5:00 on this chilly, chilly friday morning. fortunately, no precipitation falling at this hour. but that could change. >> that's right. meteorologist tom kierein is here. >> by the time you head back home from work and school, likely you'll be slipping and sliding on untreated surfaces. all the ground temperatures are well below freezing. temperatures in the air are in the mid and upper teens now, including prince george's county, arlington, fairfax and montgomery counties. it's near 20 degrees in washington. only a gradual warmup through 9:00. then the mid 20s by noon. briefly upper 20s before the snow begins to fall in the metro

in a dreamliner right now. the obama administration telling school district across the country they have to give disabled students equal access to after school sports. a letter is being sent to schools today calling for "reasonable modifications for students with disabilities." for example a flashing light that goes off at the same time as a starting gun for deaf track athletes. 12 states require accommodations. states that don't comply could risk federal funding. in the big easy, free speech. lawmakers in new orleans are trying to create a clean zone during the super bowl festivities. doing so would restrict banners, signs and flags in certain areas like the superdome and the french quarter without authorization from the city or the nfl. yesterday a judge ordered the city to scale back plans enforcing the rules only around the stadium. in news 4 your health this morning, a warning about a new stomach bug spreading quickly across the country. the cdc says it's tracked more

than 140 outbreaks of the noro-virus in the last four months. the strain isn't particularly dangerous but people with it are having a hard time fighting off effects. doctors are urging you to be vigilant about washing hands and preparing your food properly. the noro-virus isn't the thing causing stomach problems. others became sick from something they ate in 2009 and 2010 according to the cdc. 1200 of the people have been hospitalized and 23 of them died from their food-borne illness. the cdc says salmonella was to blame for the most illnesses. the senate is poised to vote next week on a bill sending billions of dollars of aid to victims of superstorm sandy. victims could receive more than $50 billion in federal aid if it passes. president obama says he'll sign the measure which has already passed in the house. some fiscal conservatives could complicate things, saying the bill would add to the national

debt. they want spending cuts in other places to offset the money in the package. incredible pictures of a dramatic rescue in australia this morning. a 14-year-old boy was caught in raging floodwaters clinging to a tree. a rescuer was able to get to the boy and after struggling against the current, get him back to safety. there have been more than 20 swift water rescues in queensland. torrential rain caused heavy flooding and cut off roads including highways. baseball fans are saying final goodbyes to a st. louis legend. hundreds of cardinals fans waited in line outside you a church in the city to pay respect to stan the man musial. he passed away saturday at his home in the the age of 92. he spent all 22 years of his career with the cardinals. a private service will be held for the legend tomorrow. we'll get a look at your forecast in 30 seconds. first tomorrow nats fans could get an answer to a pressing question. will there soon be a fifth

mid and upper teens there. it's in the mid teens in montgomery county. much of arlington and fairfax county too. down to the mid-teens this morning. most of northern virginia and the rest of maryland only in the teens. except near the bay waters and the tidal potomac where it's near 20 degrees. look at huntingtowne in calvert county. only 10 degrees there. those with the hef wrer snow, it's only hovering near 10 degrees. we have a winter weather advisory for another light snow coming in later this afternoon. all the counties in purple under a winter weather advisory. includes montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county. northern neck, eastern shore and much of maryland. there may be a zone here in the shenandoah valley. may not get as much. out in the mountains, much higher amounts are possible. it's going to be lasting longer there. perhaps into saturday way out in western maryland shall the highlands of west virginia could get up to 6 inches of snow. not nearly that much locally.

here are the amount i'm expecting from this. all of beginning around 2:00 and ending around 8:00 or 9:00 in the metro area. but may be lingering longer on the eastern shore. they'll get higher amounts, 1 to 2 inches. there may be a few isolated spots, up to 3 inches on the east side of the bay from kent down to easton and cambridge. on the west side of the bay, there could be 1 to 2 inches, including eastern prince george's county. much of anne arundel, calvert and st. mary's. washington and montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's countys and the nearby suburbs, an inch or less. the higher amounts way out in the mountains because it's going to be lasting longer there. here's how we look for several days. the snow ending tonight. sun back tomorrow. teens in the morning. afternoon highs into the low 30s. on sunday, upper teens again in the morning with afternoon highs maybe mid-30s and sunny both days. but then on monday increasing clouds. but warming up. a lot of the snow will be melting on monday with highs

tough driving conditions today. good morning. another round of snow isn't too far away. i'm eun yang. good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. welcome back to "news4 today" on this friday, january 25th. school closures keep coming into the newsroom. the federal government is open today. employees, though, can again opt for the unscheduled leave or telework. in virginia, culpeper, king george, page, stafford and spotsylvania counties are all closed today. orange county and fredericksburg county are on delay. anne arundel county schools in maryland have decided to dismiss two hours early this afternoon ahead of the next expected storm coming later on today. that is going to cause for problems later in the morning, i mean in the afternoon commute i should say. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here with more on what we need to know on the forecast. >> we may be slipping and sliding heading back home from

school today. in the low and mid teens much of the region. that includes prince george's county, arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties. we'll hold steady in the teens for another two or three hours. huntingtowne only 11 degrees in calvert county. much of southern maryland's only around 10 degrees where they got that heavier snow yesterday. we have the high, thin clouds obscuring a little bit of that moon low in the western sky now. we might have a little bit of sunshine coming through the high clouds this morning. we'll have a lot of cloud cover moving in. by noontime, this area in the lavender, this potential light show looks like it's moving into the mountains by noon. the leading edge, around 3:00 or 4:00, our western sub sushs starting to get accumulating snow. between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. into the district. by 7:00 p.m., it looks like it will be around the bay, on the eastern suburbs, on the eastern shore. it will continue to move off to the east and quickly will clear

out after that and we'll get cold again on saturday morning. here are the amounts i'm expecting. an inch or less. much of maryland, all of virginia, except the counties near the bay, on both sides, areas could get 1 to 2 inches. there may be a few isolated spots up to around 3 inches near the bay waters. on the eastern shore. also some higher amounts will be occurring way out in the mountains, i think in western maryland. some of the highlands of west virginia. it will be lasting longer, perhaps into saturday. could get well over 2 inches. higher spots could get as much as 2 to 3, 4, 5, inches in the mountains of western maryland and west virginia. all beginning around 2:00, 3:00 in the metro area. earlier in the mountains. then ending around 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. around the metro area. still lingering on the eastern shore perhaps until around 10:00 p.m. until midnight. then quickly clearing out.

inauguration monday. the first nominee to do so since michael dukakis in 1989. vice president joe biden is taking his push to curb gun violence on road. he'll join a roundtable at virginia commonwealth university in richmond. senator tim kaine, congressman bobby scott and several members of the president's cabinet will attend. they will discuss gun control with experts who worked on gun safety issues in the state in the wake of the virginia tech massacre in 2007. 5:35 right now. president obama travels outside the district for the first time of his second term next week. he will head to las vegas. the president made numerous stops there. the white house not releasing any other details about that trip. it is now 5:35. 21 degrees. coming up, the expected prison sentence for a man who leaked the name of a covert operative. a dog crediting with saving a woman's life this morning. we might see a few

degrees. much of southern -- they've got the heavier snow in calvert, parts of -- we're going to stay frigid through the morning hours. by 7:00 a.m., still in the teens with a lot of cloud cover and light wind. thickening clouds by noontime. out of the mountains, likely light snow developing then. then into the metro area, we'll likely get light snow, perhaps around 2:00 to 3:00 coming into the western suburbs around then and in washington between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. the snow is going to stick immediately because the road temperatures that are untreated are certainly well below freezing. air temperature only reaching the mid and upper 20s by mid-afternoon. sunrise at 7:20. the sunset at 5:22. by the time it tapers off and ends, by late this evening, i hi an inch or less in all the areas in the light blue, including the metro area. the darker blue areas, east of washington, on the bay and the eastern shore, there could be 1 to 2 inches. maybe isolated spots more than

welcome back at 5:44 today. a former cia officer will be sentenced to prison for leaking the name of a covert operative to a reporter. the man has agreed to spend more than two years in prison. he and his supporters say the government is punishing him for speaking out against torture the cia conducted. prosecutors say he was after fame and fortune. this is sentencing day for the man who attacked a security guard at a daycare center in prince george's county. michael young pleaded guilty to two charges last year stemming from a brutal attack in landover in april. young beat that guard with a baseball bat when he wouldn't let him use the phonement surveillance video of that attack will play in the courtroom today. a legend of local politics is fighting for her life after being pulled if her burning home. firefighters say 83-year-old christine jones wasn't breathing when they found her during this

detector. prince george's county police say a gang rivalry led to the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy. akil ings and kquantae fisher gunned down 16-year-old marcus jones outside a party in ft. washington. it stemmed from gang violence. police are searching for a third suspect. a surprising twist this morning about a fake report of a gunman that had the campus of the university of virginia at wise on lockdown. the bristol herald courier reports 20 we're old bryant hairston of martinsville, virginia because he wanted to look like a hero prosecutors said. hairston was trying to deflect attention if a prior assault charge against a woman. he's now charged with making a false police report and he has been banned from campus. there is a new bill in congress this morning that would make the district of columbia the 51st state of the nation. delaware senator tom carper and three others are sponsoring a bill giving d.c. full statehood. it's not expected to pass but many say it's a promising sign that support for statehood is at

least growing. last week delegate holmes norton introduced a similar bill naming d.c. the new klum kcolumbia. a tough bill for allowing gay marriage is rhode island. it faces uncertainty in the rhode island state senate. it's voted down every same-sex marriage bill since 1997. rhode island is currently the only state in new england to not allow same-sex marriages. it's currently legal in nine states plus d.c. one of d.c.'s most prominent law firms facing a lawsuit from a former employee. wilmer hail filed her while she was on leave adopting her daughter from china. she filed a suit yesterday. levinson said she was passed over for promotions because of her age and her gender. wilmer hale says the claims have no merit. filling your gas tank could get more expensive in maryland. the senate president there, thomas miller, is proposing the

idea of allowing counties to raise the state's gas tax by five cents to fund transportation projects. the state already tacks on 23.5 cents pergam but hasn't been raised since 1992. miller is proposing a 3% sales tax program. it woulden rate $300 million. a library in detroit has found a way to make sure people return those books. the public library hired a collection agency to go after people with overdue books and movies. yes, they say if it goes long enough it can hurt their credit scores. the library says it will only go after borrowers with more than $20 worth of items. they've lost about $40,000 in unreturned rentals over the past five years. catcher in the ry is so good. you don't want to give it back. got to let it go. >> buy it yourself. >> president obama may often clash with republicans but he apparently also has issues with another group. flies. look closely at the president

special olympics. we want to tell you about west education campus in d.c., closed due to a power outage. eer not sure if it's weather-related. it's closed today. we're going to need all the heat we can muster the next couple of days, tom. >> off to work and school this morning, it's a stone cold morning. earlier this week i visited this school. the center ridge elementary school in centreville, virginia, in fairfax county. talked to a couple of hundred second graders. do you remember that? >> some of the best teachers were first, second grade teachers. teacher on the right in the back. she invited me to speak to a couple hundred of these second graders. they've had a unit on weather. they're studying weather now. we talked about the importance of paying attention to the forecast and when is if going to snow? well they got their wish yesterday and today later when they come home from school. i loved my visit there on tuesday. the temperatures are cold in

centreville, down to around 15 degrees there. much of fairfax county in the mid teens as it arlington, montgomery and prince george's countys. near 20 in washington and right near the chesapeake bay. teens out of the mountains as well. going forward in the afternoon, thickening clouds. this is as of nn time. these are the zones of likely snow moving into the mountains. right into the metro area into washington by around 3:00, 4:00 or so for our western suburbs. 3:00 to 4:00 into washington. then by 7:00 p.m., a lot of the snow is going to be east of washington. but still snowing in prince george's county. southern maryland around the bay and the eastern shore. that's where some of the locations could get the higher amounts quickly. it will end by mid to late evening. these are the amounts i'm expecting. an inch or less. all the areas in light blue, including the immediate metro area. some spots a dusting.
